Welcome to the website of the Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association! The CHVA endeavors to give all the benefits of a large, all-encompassing club dedicated to the preservation of the Depression/World War II era and later vehicles. The purpose of the club is to provide a place where publications and activities will be designed to cater to this particular era of vehicles and auto-related memories. We feel these vehicles deserve a place where those people who consider them to be of historical and sentimental value, can follow those convictions in fellowship with people of similar interest.

CHVA Regions enjoy activities that include cruise nights, judged car shows, day trips, weekend tours, and national tours. To join CHVA you do not need to own a classic car. Just contact any Region near you. If there is not a Region in your vicinity you may join the National organization and even establish your own Region.

The National Association of CHVA website has been redesigned! We now have a domian name: CHVAnational.org. The new look is intended to streamline the information and make it easy for visitors to browse. If you can't find something you're looking for, send an email, we'll look for it!

CHVA's Car #1 (Added 9/4/10)
Here is a picture of car #1 in the CHVA. In other words when we started CHVA back in 1966, this was my one and only antique car, and I still own it. It is a 1939 Buick Special Series 41 4-door convertible with sidemounts and a full leather interior. Best regards, Earl D. Beauchamp, Jr. #1 (See photos here!)

President's Message - August 2010, by BK Showalter (Added 8/3/10)
A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken. ~ James Dent For CHVA'ers, one must add car tours to Mr. Dent's list. Not only do road trips please drivers, our multi-day National and Mini Tours give people outside the hobby a look at the past, a vicarious moment in a life they may have known as children during WWII or as teens in the Fifties. Tours show our vintage machines functioning in real-life settings, leaving a far more memorable impression than stationery exhibits. Read More... Plus: Preliminary 2011 Tour Flier

MESSAGE TO THE MEMBERSHIP (Added 8/3/10)
Please help us bring the club into the 21st century. In order to more efficiently serve you we need your email addresses. We know that approximately 80% of the population is on line so it is logical to conclude that that percentage or more exists in our membership. At the moment we have email addresses for 28% of you. If you currently receive the monthly alert about the website, we already have your email address. Please send an email to who as recording secretary is pursuing this effort. Thanks.

New Photos Added (Added 6/3/10)

Ida Awards a Blue Ribbon to an Old Olds - by Jim Lucas AKA Chief Rightwing (Added 9/4/10)
From our first date and throughout our married life (which began a couple of weeks after we met) everything became "We", "Us" and "Ours"! However, the concept of "His", "Hers" and "Yours" developed in the areas of household chores and old cars. The family car was referred to as our our car, but the vintage cars were always his! This slowly began to change when I acquired a '41 Olds. Read more...(Note: photo-heavy, large download)

paulEarly F-Series - by Paul Schneider (Added 9/4/10)
In 1967, I purchased a blue and white 1954 Ford F-100 pick-up from a former classmate of mine. It had a six-cylinder engine that I knew would have to come out. This was back when I was still doing a lot of wrenching. The replacement engine was a 292 V8 with 312 heads. This was hooked up to a three-speed transmission. I remember when I first fired it up.... bk showalterTanks for the Memories - September 2010, by BK Showalter (Added 9/4/10)
Until Wilson Bell's dad hired me, I presumed the criteria for workers in his lumberyard involved measures such as size and strength. Therefore, with dozens of State College football players available almost year-round, his job offer surprised me. Later I figured out that Mr. Bell hired me in the faint hope I'd steer his son away from trouble. Read More...

larryOld Cars and New Laws, September 2010 - by Larry Becker (Added 9/4/10)
Several of our State Legislators are on summer recess and therefore there is not much new activity in the various states. The following state bills are not laws at this time. They have recently been introduced and are under consideration by the respective states. Read more...

The Note Stop - August 2010, by BK Showalter (Added 8/3/10)
Norton became our first-string quarterback because he was faster than Bannister and could throw a football sixty yards. To add frosting to that cake he looked like a young Errol Flynn. Last, but certainly not least, he owned a beautiful '47 Ford coupe. I wasn't jealous of his looks or football skills, but I surely coveted that car. There was something about its Forties styling that made that machine seem ideal for a kid like me. Read More...

Old Cars and New Laws, August 2010 - by Larry Becker (Added 8/3/10)
Here are the top ten states where drivers are most likely to be ticketed for speeding. My Wonder Dog - by Paul Schneider (Added 8/3/10)
Back in the early 1980s my wife and I purchased a short haired miniature Dachshund. The dog was going to be a lap dog for my wife. This was in the fall and the Dachshund was just a puppy. We named her Brandy. My wife and I were still both working, only I got out of work much earlier. When I got home I would always take the puppy outside. The grass was still growing, so I would put the puppy in my jacket with only its head sticking out... Read more...

A National Tour and a Search for a War Bonnet - by Jim Lucas AKA Chief Rightwing (Added 6/13/10)
The expression that June, July and August are the only reasons that people become teachers, is not always a joke. However, even good teachers recognize that it is a splended benefit! After our kids were in high school, Ida found employment in the same school district where I was teaching and reaped the benefits of June, July and August, which was ideal for CHVA touring and long trips around America.
